Mixed Modern combatives

self-defense for the real world

The average person can cover a distance of 21 feet in approximately 1.5 seconds. When an armed attacker is at this distance, relying on the preemption, self-defense, and weapons modalities is imperative. Understanding a weapon’s limitations and capabilities is important, and they may vary depending on if the attacker is trying to harm you or someone else. Using de-escalation to create extra time and space for yourself and knowing the bounds of the law are the first skills to rely on when navigating a person with a weapon. Lastly, concealing yourself or finding cover is helpful at this distance. TUELLER DRILL The reality
of TIME
+ SPACE
When an attacker is 9-15 feet away, there are roughly 0.65 seconds to react and make a defensive counter measure before they close the distance. Due to the limited reaction time and close proximity, it is highly unlikely that a firearm or weapon of opportunity can be drawn and deployed quickly enough to stop them. Stepping out of the person’s direct line creates more time and space and can give you an opportunity to position yourself better. If preemption has failed, striking is the next modality to rely on due to the space between you and the attacker. Depending on their weapon, a punch, kick, or tackle are the best defensive options to keep yourself safe. RANGE MASTER STUDY The reality
of TIME
+ SPACE
Once an attacker is in the 5-3 feet range, an altercation may be unavoidable. Understanding the striking, clinch, grappling, and weapons modalities and using them in combination, such as striking and going into the clinch, is key to stopping them. Creating time and space is also important to give yourself an opportunity to implement a weapon of your own or gain control of theirs. The only way to be ready for a violent altercation is to train in violence. Continually practicing techniques until they are a natural reaction is the only way to prevail when attacked.

I trained Krav Maga for a few years before visiting this facility and since then my results have been through the roof. I visit as often as possible and don't plan on slowing down any time soon.
